PhD Enquiries

How can I apply for a doctoral position at TSELab?

General information for Zhejiang University’s online application system can be found on this page.

You should pay particular attention to our instructions below regarding personal statements, as they are a key component of our application assessment process. Please do not hesitate to get in touch with us before applying.

To ensure that we receive your application, please make sure that you have named Dr Simon Hu as your preferred supervisor.
What information should I include in my personal statement?

Your research statement should be 2-3 pages long, and must include the following three components:

  • An overview of your academic background, highlighting previous GPAs, graduation rank (if known) and a list of any awards received.
  • A brief summary of any previous research outputs (ie. dissertations, research placements). If available, provide links to any relevant materials or codes (eg. on github).
  • An outline of the research topic that you would like to focus on during your PhD.

Your outline should demonstrate your understanding of current R&D trends in academia and industry, and must include a list of references. Proposed topics are not binding, and are expected to evolve over the course of a PhD.

Can you review my personal statement before submission?

We always try to advise potential candidates on the range of topics that are currently of interest to our group, and on the complimentarity between our activities and their interests.

However, as the quality of the research statement is one of the key components of our assessment process, we regretably cannot offer feedback on draft statements before submission.

What are the academic requirements for admission to TSELab as a PhD student?

We welcome candidates with a background in any relevant engineering/scientific discipline and a passion for transport systems and logistics.

For the minimum academic requirements set by Zhejiang University for admission to our postgraduate programmes, you can refer to this page. As we expect candidates to have a first class Masters-level degree (or non-UK equivalent), our requirements may be slightly higher than the grades listed on that page.

Please note that meeting academic requirements does not guarantee entry, as we also consider relevant experience, proficiency in English and references in our review process. Eligible candidates should have excellent mathematical skills, a good command of modern scientific programming languages (i.e. Python, R, C++, C#), and a familiarity with operations research or transport analytics.

What forms of funding are available for doctoral students?

We will be advertising any TSELab-specific PhD studentships on this website and our Institute PhD opportunities page.

For international Ph.D. applicants, there are three types of scholarships you can apply that cover tuition and provide salary.

  1. Chinese Government Scholarship (CGC)
  2. Zhejiang University Scholarship
  3. Zhejiang University Scholarship for International Postgraduate student

Let us know in your initial email if you have been succesful in obtaining an external scholarship, or are able to self-fund your studies.

How long will it take until I receive a response to my application?
The processing time of submitted PhD applications is approximately three months.
When should I submit my application?
As we can only admit a limited number of PhD students to our group every year, we encourage any potential applicants to submit their applications as early as possible.
If my application is accepted, when would my studies begin?
Although PhD students can commence their studies at any time, our preference is for a start date in early October, which would coincide with most induction courses and welcome events.
